Toilet Roll Measurement Guide

Toilet Paper Roll Dimensions: Width, Diameter, Circumference, Length and Inner Core Diameter

Direct answer

For an OEM toilet roll, one number is not enough. Record the roll width, outer diameter, inner core diameter, sheet size, sheet count or total roll length, then check the finished roll with its wrapper, multipack and carton.

Measurement index

Record each measurement separately.

Labels such as large, standard or jumbo do not tell a buyer the actual roll dimensions. Record each value before comparing offers.

  1. 01

    Roll width

The side-to-side width of the finished tissue roll.

  2. 02

    Outer diameter

The straight distance across the full round face of the finished roll.

  3. 03

    Circumference

The distance around the outside of the finished roll.

  4. 04

    Inner core diameter

The diameter of the opening inside the paper core.

  5. 05

    Sheet size

Sheet size is normally recorded as roll width × perforation length.

  6. 06

    Total roll length

The total linear length of tissue wound on the finished roll.

How to record each value

Measure the finished roll without guessing from the pack.

Packaging can hide or compress part of the roll. Use the finished product, note the unit, and keep inner-core and outer-roll measurements clearly separated.

Roll width

It affects holder fit, wrapper width and carton layout.

Record it: Measure the finished roll from one paper edge to the other.

Outer diameter

It affects holder clearance, multipack size and carton packing.

Record it: Measure through the center of the finished roll without compressing it.

Circumference

It describes the same outside size as diameter, but it is not the paper length.

Record it: Calculate it from the outer diameter or measure around the roll without squeezing it.

Inner core diameter

The inner opening must match the intended holder or dispenser.

Record it: Measure the opening through the center of the core without compressing it.

Sheet size

It defines the usable area of each sheet and makes sheet-count comparisons clearer.

Record it: Write both dimensions in the same unit for one unfolded sheet.

Total roll length

It is more useful than outside size alone when comparing paper quantity.

Record it: State the total length or calculate it from verified sheet count and sheet length.

Calculation notes

Three calculations buyers can check.

Use these formulas to check the figures on a specification sheet. Final approval should still be based on the finished sample.

Circumference from diameter

Circumference = outer diameter × π

A 120 mm outer diameter gives an outside circumference of about 377 mm. This is a calculation example, not a standard toilet roll specification.

Total length from perforated sheets

Total roll length = sheet count × sheet length

Use this only when the sheet count and the distance between perforations are both confirmed.

Sheet area

Sheet area = roll width × sheet length

Two rolls with the same sheet count can still provide different paper areas when their sheet dimensions differ.

Comparison errors

A visually larger roll is not automatically a longer roll.

Paper, inner core diameter, embossing and winding all affect the finished roll. One outside measurement does not show how much tissue is on it.

  1. 01

    Do not compare diameter alone.

Inner core diameter, ply, GSM, embossing and winding can change the finished diameter without creating the same total roll length.

  2. 02

Do not treat circumference as paper length.

Circumference describes only the current outside of the roll. Total roll length describes the tissue after it is unwound.

  3. 03

Do not compare sheet counts without sheet size.

A higher count is not directly comparable when the perforation length or roll width is different.

  4. 04

Do not use a market reference as an approved specification.

Household, hospitality, retail and dispenser-based formats can differ. Confirm the target roll and a finished sample for the actual project.

OEM inquiry sheet

Send the roll measurements and packing details you already have.

The details do not all need to be final. Mark any open points so the supplier knows what still needs to be checked against the sample and pack format.

  • Target roll width and outer diameter
  • Core type and inner core diameter
  • Ply, target GSM and material preference
  • Sheet width, perforation length and sheet count or total roll length
  • Embossing, perforation, feel and strength target
  • Single-roll wrapper, multipack or bulk format
  • Units per pack, carton reference and quantity range
  • Target market, sales channel and sample needs

Buyer questions

Before you compare two rolls.

Is circumference the same as toilet paper roll length?

No. Circumference measures around the outside of the roll; roll length measures the tissue after it is unwound.

Can two toilet rolls have the same diameter but different amounts of paper?

Yes. Inner core diameter, ply, GSM, embossing, sheet dimensions and winding can differ. Compare total roll length or verified sheet count and sheet size, not diameter alone.

Which toilet roll dimensions should be included in an OEM inquiry?

Include roll width, outer diameter, inner core diameter, sheet size, sheet count or total length, ply, target GSM, embossing, perforation, wrapper, pack format and carton reference. A physical sample or clear measurement photos can reduce ambiguity.
