Toilet Paper Roll Weight: Net Paper, Core and Packaging

Quick answer

There is no single toilet paper roll weight that applies to every product. Before comparing two figures, confirm what was weighed: paper alone, a roll with its core, or rolls with packaging. Record the quantity and unit beside the weight.

Three weights that should not be mixed

Net paper weight

In this guide, net paper weight means the paper itself, excluding the core and all packaging. Do not assume a supplier’s “net weight” uses this definition: ask what it includes and whether it refers to a roll, pack or case.

Roll weight including the core

An unwrapped cored roll placed on a scale includes both paper and core. It is not a paper-only reading. Record any other material still attached rather than silently counting it as paper.

Weight with packaging

A wrapped roll, sealed multipack and packed carton are different weighing objects. State whether individual wrappers, outer film, cartons and inserts are included; identify a pallet separately if one is part of the total.

Record the roll, pack or case basis

Write the unit and the counted contents, not just “weight per pack.” For a case, record packs per case and rolls per pack, or the total roll count if rolls are packed loose.

Dividing a pack weight by its roll count gives an average allocation per roll on that same basis. It does not remove cores or packaging, and it does not show the weight of each individual roll.

A reusable weight record

Use one record for each sample and weighing object. The entries below are recording prompts, not product specifications or measured results.

Prepare a weight check someone else can repeat

Buyers can use the following approach to make a sample check easier to repeat. It is a suggested method, not a claim about TISVEN’s testing procedure or a certified test standard.

  1. Identify the sample before opening it

Record a sample reference, date, roll count and packing condition. Photograph the intact pack and keep removed packaging with that sample.

  2. Record the weighing setup

Use a scale suitable for the load and the differences you need to compare. Check its unit and zero reading on a stable surface. Record the scale identifier and displayed resolution; resolution alone is not proof of accuracy.

  3. Keep readings separate from deductions

Record the original reading before subtracting anything. For a paper-only result, separately weigh the core and packaging removed from the same sample. Note any paper left on the core or material lost during separation. If a representative tare is used instead, label the result as an estimate.

  4. Retain a record another person can follow

Keep readings, tare values, units, quantity and photos together. Record visible dampness or damage and any different handling conditions. If you check several rolls, retain individual readings rather than only an average.

Paper-only result = starting sample weight − included non-paper components

Use the same sample quantity and unit throughout. Subtract only components included in the starting reading, and do not subtract packaging twice after using a tared container. Incomplete separation limits the result.

Align two quotes before comparing the numbers

Ask both suppliers to confirm the following before comparing a weight-based quote:

  • The same weight definition: paper alone, roll with core, or a stated packaged total.
  • The same quantity and unit, with rolls per pack and packs per case stated.
  • Whether each figure is directly weighed, tare-subtracted or theoretically estimated, with its sample reference or calculation inputs.
  • The quoted product construction, sheet size, sheet count or roll length, core and packing format, plus the price basis and included charges.

Weight alone does not establish softness, strength, usable length or value for money. A price per kilogram also needs a defined kilogram basis: paper-only mass and packaged mass are not interchangeable denominators.

Keep a theoretical paper-weight calculation labelled as an estimate. Its result depends on the stated paper area, quantity and basis-weight assumptions; it is not evidence that a finished sample was weighed.

What to send with a supplier inquiry

Send the sample reference and known specification, then ask the supplier to complete the missing weight definitions. Leave unknown values open rather than filling them with an assumed standard roll weight.

OEM toilet roll weight brief

  • Sample reference and photos; physical sample available or not
  • Requested weight basis: paper only / roll with core / packaged total
  • Weight value and unit, if known; measured, tare-subtracted or estimated
  • Core and packaging included or excluded; tare details, if used
  • Rolls per pack, packs per case and total rolls per case
  • Material, ply, stated GSM basis, sheet size and sheet count or roll length, if known
  • Core, roll dimensions, pack format and the quote unit to compare
